12/20/08 - Look Who's Awake!!!

Just the other day, Aimee and I thought we would never see these beautiful eyes looking back at us again. Oh what an amazing feeling this was today to see Kayleigh open her eyes for the first time in several days. Our hearts just melted, we had a smile from ear to ear and we praised God and gave Him all the glory for healing our daughter. I almost wish every single one of you could have seen how close to death Kayleigh actually was. She was looking so rough and swollen, that we chose not to take photos because that is not how we wanted to remember her if she passed away. It was by far one of the most painful and frightening situations anyone could ever be in. We have never cried so much in our whole lives than we did that whole day.

Kayleigh still looks swollen, but not nearly as bad as she was. If you remember the photos from her open heart surgery, she was much worse than that. Kayleigh is amazing and she continues to make improvements. She is currently on 46% oxygen and completely off the paralytic. They still have it hooked up in case they need it for an emergency. If you see on her arms, she has a couple IV's and an arterial line in too. There is also a Broviac Line in her abdomen that is a straight shot to her heart for other medications or if she needs blood. These lines are delivering Kayleigh her triple mix nutrients, steroid medication, hypertension medication, hypothyroid medication, sedation medication and pain medications. She has great urinary output, so that will allow the swelling/edema to make its way out of the body. Her face is so puffy, they have to lubricate her eyes to they don't dry out, which makes it look likes she's crying. The tube in her nose is pulling off green gook from her stomach, which is "backup" from her digestive tract slowing down. It is green because of her stomach acids, yummy.

Kayleigh's x-rays continue to show signs of improvement in her lungs. Since being put in a different position, getting chest PT and a steroid, it has allowed the mess in her lungs to break up and be suctioned out. Seeing her sat in the 90's while being awake is a great sight to see. Just the other day, she was completely sedated and paralyzed, and she was still desatting at the slightest touch or noise. Speaking of noise, the yellow thing on her ear is her ear muff. We just rolled her over, so she only had it on one side. When she has both on, she looks like an air traffic controller from the airport.

They are planning on putting in a JG Tube, which will feed Kayleigh her breast milk/fortifier, but the tube will be inserted past her stomach. They have to enter outside the stomach, through the skin and right in to her intestines. The reason they are doing that is to keep Kayleigh from inhaling her reflux from micro-aspirations, which may be the reason she got pneumonia in the first place. One way or the other, she will be able to grow quicker, not have to worry about digestion problems and it reduces the risk of other infections.

The plan is to follow Kayleigh's lead. If Kayleigh responds well to weaning off the vent, then so be it. If she tolerates less medications, then they will reduce her medications. So far, she is progressing wonderfully and everyone is in complete amazement right now. We walk through the halls today with people smiling at us as they know Kayleigh is doing well. The other day, they would put on one of those "Bless you heart" faces, so we are glad to everyone else happy too. Aimee and I were nearly jumping out of our skin we were so happy today. People may have thought we were crazy or something.

Aimee and I were able to come home and spend some time with Brandon and Allyson. We told them all about the wonderful people out there and how they are helping us out financially. They both felt like they wanted to do something similar for someone else in need, so they asked if they could have one less gift so they could donate that gift money to someone who needs it (like a lot of you are doing for us). So our family as a whole, even though we are struggling, felt it would glorify God by passing on the $20-25 per gift we have gotten so far to an organization of their choice. Allyson is not sure where she wants to donate. Brandon, heart breaker as he is, said he wants to donate it to a foster child. How sweet is he?!?!?

Thank you EVERYONE for your support through this tough time. Please keep praying HARD for Kayleigh. Things are moving in the right direction and we are so blessed to have had another day with our little girl.

God Bless,

The Freemans :)

Since I work in the hospital as a Registered Dietitian I totally understand the JG tube reasoning and I have to say Adam you did an excellent job of explaining the need for it and why it is better than receiving her nutrition through a vein. Just shows how much you love her and want to understand every decision that is made.

I am so incredibly grateful she is doing better. My daughter was born at 38 wks, after a emergency c-section. She was flight for lifed to childrens here in denver. She has pulmonary hypertension along with narrowing of her pulmonary arteries. They think that her ductus arteriosus closed early. We spent 5 days in the NICU. Those were the longest and most painful days of my life. Thankfully she is home, (6 weeks old) and doing well. Just on oxygen, and no viagra or anything else. At the time people asked me how I could keep it together, and I know you don't know how strong you really are, until you have no choice to be anything else.I don't know what you all are going through, I just have a taste (with some of the medical issues), yet I feel like I can relate to the extreme stress, ups and downs, and being forced to attempt to keep it together. This has been hard on us, ntil I read her blog. I now feel lucky, and do pray (I don't usually do that) that one day in the near future you will be doing the same. At home!! You all have really reminded me that miracles DO happen. Your incredible little girl is proof of that. Your other children are angels as well. Your family is in my thoughts daily, and I told my little Isabella grace, to tell her guardian angel to keep her safe, and help with a speedy recovery. I will continue to keep every one of you in my thoughts, and believe in my heart that there will be a time when this blog says "Going home" Thank you for sharing your story, and making me appreciate everything more!

Kayleigh is a miracle and a huge fighter. I have been following and praying for your family since i read aimee's story on the oct. 08 board on babycenter.i believe your family will have a true christmas miracle and kayleigh will continue to fight and improve. while i dont have any experience with a preemie or the nicu 2 years ago my husband defied all odds and survived many health conditions including a severe GI bleed resulting in a bloodcount of 3 and also a code blue so I KNOW MIRACLES HAPPEN and he is also praying for her from one fighter to another. We know kayleigh is going to continue to grow and do better by each day and then before you know it adam you will be waiting by the door to chase off all the boys.

My son Nicky got a gift from our neighbors yesterday...a walkie talkie to play with his brother. He was amazed that you could hear him from another room, without seeing him. This morning, we said our Kayleigh and Karg baby prayer, and Nicky said that his heart was the walkie talkie for God, cuz he knows he knows he can hear him, even though he's in another room:) True and so wonderful to see my little boy "get it".

I am a new reader of your blog. After reading all of your entries, I have been thinking about you guys and Kayleigh non-stop. I am so happy she is doing well.

So the antibiotics are working? Is there still some chance that she doesn't tolerate the fortifier very well? It sounded like (in previous entries) that everytime she started it again, she would have a set back. Could that b e?

I was just curious. I am praying for Kayleigh everyday!

What wonderful news to wake up to!! I'm thrilled that she's doing better each day. Not only is your story so amazing and emotional right now, but you really have a talent for writing. Because when you talk about not certain things, it puts me right back in time to when all of these things were happening to David. I remember when David was so close to death, I vividly remember the swelling (he looked like a marshmellow!) and even the color that he was. And I also remember trying to decide if I wanted to take pictures, since I also did not want to remember him by that in case he did pass away. By the grace of God he didn't, but I still don't like to remember him that way, so I'm glad now that I didn't take pictures until he started to look a little bit better.
Anyways... I'm delighted to hear that she's pulled through it again! She is such a little miracle, Adam, seriously!
Oh, and one more question, you're talking about a JG tube? Will she be getting a mickey button? For a period of time, David had to get a J-Tube, but they put it through his mickey button. The only way I know to tell the difference is, his mickey button goes directly into his stomach, whereas the J-Tube goes into his intestine... but can they be interchanged if they start out as a J-Tube? What if she needs a G-Tube later, can you use the same hole? Just curious.
I hope tomorrow brings equally good news!!

Hello Adam and Aimee.... you and I don't know one another personally, but a friend of mine posted Kayleigh's blog on her website and I checked it out- now I'm hooked!

My name is Patty and I am a 34 year old single mother to one little girl; engaged to be married in 2009.

I feel an attachment to little Kayleigh, not because I have experienced any of what you are going through before, but because I am in the Respiratory Care field (will graduate in August) and believe that my calling is in the NICU- with babies just like Kayleigh.

I did a 4 week clinical rotation in the NICU this past semester and believe I have found my calling..... what I saw amazed me and made my heart smile.

So thank you for allowing me this opportunity to follow you (and Kayleigh's) story.

God bless you all and I will keep praying..........

YAY!!!! I am glad to hear that Kayleigh continues to improve. What a doll baby she is. I was wondering if they are going to put a feeding tube in her stomach, like a mickey button (although I am sure she is too small for the button itself, but something similar) and just make it a JG tube for now? I was also wondering if they are going to do a fundoplication (sp?) to keep her from refluxing. Just curious. Kaden and Ava both ended up getting a feeding tube and the fundo.

Your children are so sweet to want to help others. I know exactly how heart warming it is to get help from others and the need to give back. I only wish that I could give you guys more right now.

Brandon and Allyson,
You two are amazing!!! You guys are going to be wonderful role models for your little sister. She is very lucky to have such a caring brother and sister in her life.

You all continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

It is such a great site to see and her eyes are just so calming. Her fighting spirit is so inspirational and God's hands are definitely at work her with his little miracle-worker. Praise be to God for he is 100% committed to this little angel. Allyson and Brandon-I am amazed with you two what wonderful children you are to give to others. Brandon I love your pick because I work with foster children everyday. They will absolutely appreciate your gift and kindness. What wonderful role models Kayleigh has for siblings. Thank you for being so understanding of your parent's time needed for Kayleigh. I would also love to get them each a gift for being such wonderful children. Adam and Aimee you have amazing children that follow God's word daily. Kayleigh will continue to amaze you everyday as she continues to improve with her great fighting spirit. I am so overjoyed and went to church this morning with thanksgiving for this wonderful gift.

I am so happy for your entire family! What a wonderful site, to open your blog and see her looking back at all of us. Kaleigh is truly an amazing baby, with such a strong will to live. Prayer is so powerful, and I will continue to pray for Kayleigh.
I also want to mention how special Allyson and Brandon are. They have come to have an understanding about life that most kids their age are not even aware of. I hope all of you have a very Merry Christmas.

I'm continuously praying for her strength to pull through everything! She's such an amazing little baby! and so are you-Adam and Aimee! You have such an amazing support team! :) I love reading your blog and seeing all the comments! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and wish you all the best!
