4/22/09 - "Our Sweet Little Girl"

After a long and emotional day, we were able to gather some information about Kayleigh's prognosis to pass along to everyone.

A CT-scan was completed this afternoon to determine what may be the cause to Kayleigh's shocking lack of brain functions. It appears there was a lack of blood and/or oxygen supply to the brain during or shortly after her surgery this past week. The other option is that Kayleigh had a pre-existing condition that worsened with the surgery. However, the latter of the two can be cancelled out as there were no obvious issues that can relate to the problems she is having now.

Being that Kayleigh had two blood transfusions this past week and a very low blood pressure number tells me that the problem may be with the lack of oxygen/blood to the brain, but no one is for certain at this time. The doctors still want to see how her body reacts with time, but Aimee and I are pushing for other tests to be done in case there is a reason and it could be something that may be fixed. Time may hurt us if we just sit back and wait to see how Kayleigh reacts. Aimee and I asked for the CT-scan to be done and that is why it was performed today. Even if they may feel nothing can fix the damage that is done, we at least want some answers.

If you look at the bright side of things, Kayleigh is coming down more on her settings. Her oxygen is practically at room temperature, she has been able to get the pain meds out of her system, her blood pressure is normal, and she is not desatting at all. She has woken up and moved around, but the blank stare in her eyes and the repetitive movement in her limbs quickly tells you there is something seriously wrong.

She did react to our voices and seemed to kick her legs a little more, but none of her movements show any kind of purpose. Before, she would reach for her mouth and suck on her fingers, she would grab for her toys, or she would grip your finger when you held her hand. Now, there isn't anymore of that happening and it breaks our heart to see her in this condition.

If time is to determine what is wrong and if things don't progress, we can only hope that Kayleigh's brain will allow her to breath on her own. Starting tonight, the doctors are going to wean her pressure control to see if her body can breath without the help. If she can't breath on her own, then Kayleigh's future prognosis is not going to be good news at all.

It was a blessing for Aimee and I to hold her for several hours and talk to her about many things, such as her big sisters birthday tonight and what bacon tastes like since that helped with her progress in December. We talked about playing at home one day and how fun it will be to have the whole family together. We talked for hours about everything so she could hear our voice and know that no matter what, she will be okay.

We have not lost hope and we trust that God has a huge plan for Kayleigh. He has done many wonderful things with her so far, but we would be sad to see Kayleigh go and not be able to personally share her story for the rest of her life. Although, If God has plans for her in heaven, Aimee and I promise with all that we have, we will continue to share her story to help others through their own journey.

"Kayleigh, you are such a blessing to us and we are forever grateful to have you in our lives. Your Mommy and I could not be more proud of you for the strength and determination you have showed us in the past year. We are all much better people because of you and we love you so very much. May you continue to fight this fight as hard as you can and know that our Lord is holding your hand every step of the way. We are so blessed and honored to call you our sweet little girl."

Thank you all for your overwhelming support through these difficult times. Your words of encouragement have lifted us up throughout the day to stay strong and continue to be there for Kayleigh while she fights for her life.

God Bless,

Kayleigh is so lucky to have a mother and father such as you guys. I know you love and care for her so much and I know Kayleigh can feel that love today. Remember the doctors have been wrong in the past and you guys are her advocates so push for those tests if it can offer any information to correct this situation. I know God has great plans for Kayleigh and I pray that it is to be with her wonderful family her on Earth. She has made this world a much better place because of her fighting spirit and with you guys in sharing her inspiring story. Thank you for updating which I know is difficult after a day like today. You know, as I was praying for Kayleigh today I thought of something... I wonder how many people will be in heaven because of the seeds you have planted through the miracles of Kayleigh's story. She is such a tiny little girl, but her reward in heaven must already be so great already! Her life certainly has a purpose and I know that our Lord is holding her in the palm of His hand. WE might not be able to see purpose in her movements, but she might just be reaching out to play with the angels sent to comfort her through this. I'm praying for a big miracle for Kayleigh and comfort for your entire family!

Adam and Aimee,

I can't imagine what you are going thru, but your bright side...is WAY brighter than you may think. Just because the drs call her "Brain Dead" doesn't mean she is. Someone who is "Brain Dead" won't open her eyes, kick her leggs, or respond to your voice. Kayleigh has gone thru alot in the past couple days and she may just need some time to heal. The reason I feel so strogly about this is because my mother had this happen to her. She had a scan show brain damage and then she got off her phenobarb and then the scans were normal. This was unexplainable, but the fact of the matter is that it happened! Just don't give up.

I'm an RN student and I just learned the other day in physiaology class that the brain is capable of growing new connections around damage. It can rerout itself. Look at all the survivors of car crashes and gun shot wounds! A day or two ago was the 10th anniversary of the Columbine HS massacre and that boy who crawled out of the third floor window with two bullest in his head learned how to walk and talk again and is a lawyer now! Brain damage patients learn these skills again because their brains formed new connections around the damage. Kayleigh can, too! Keep her stimulated by talking to her and playing with her and you'll give her a really great chance!!!

Kayleigh is absolutely beautiful! It's heartbreaking to hear of the latest turn of events. Your daughter sounds like such a fighter with a will to live! Her story is so inspiring! I will pray for her to recover from whatever trauma has caused this, and for your family to receive the kind of peace that only God can provide.

Hugs,

All I can say is THANK YOU JESUS for the day Aimee and Adam had with Kayleigh!

Father, grant wisdom to every doctor and nurse in her care. Shine light where the darnkness is trying to hide. Shine Your love all through her precious little body. Give hope to all those around this family - as they watch them cling to You no matter how the circumstances may look. Father, give them peace, joy and above all comfort as they wait on You!

Father, bring others around them to be the hands and feet in their home and fill them with an abundance to meet their every need now...so all of their focus can be on You and Kayleigh. Father, hold them tightly in Your loving hands and allow them to feel You like never before!

I ask these things in Your Son's most Blessed name! Jesus Christ our Lord! AMEN!

Hugs and love,
Jill
Who is so thankful to hear she is still with you!

She has more fighting power than a troop of soldiers. She is amazing and everyone is so proud of her. Through her story, so many people have been touched and encouraged to strengthen their relationship with God... myself included.

I will never give up hope for Kayleigh. She has pointed me back to the light. May God's will be Done.

I'm remaining hopefull that she'll get through this. I don't think God would've saved her so many times only to bring her to Heaven now. (Or I'm chosing to believe this b/c it's heartbreaking to think of the alternative.)

Lots of love and prayers for you and your beautiful family.

I have totally, utterly, and completely fallen in love with your little angel.

You should put a bigger disclaimer on your blog that there is no way to not fall in love with Kayleigh Anne :)

She is, no doubt, the definition of a miracle. I'm spreading the word everywhere I go. Soon, my whole college community will be praying for your baby. My African American Lit class is taking a picture tomorrow "praying for Kayleigh" and I'll send it along immediately. Give her an extra hug and kiss for Rachel.

Xoxo,
Rachel

Thank heavens she woke up! That is a big step. Someone who is considered flat lined would not wake up. The brain is an amazing organ and has abilities beyond what we will ever fully comprhend on how to heal itself! Give her some time. Just because she isn't grabbing at things doesn't mean anything just yet. She has been through something traumatic and just because she is off pain meds doesn't mean she still isn't loopy. Someone mentioned cooling the bodies core tempature to help the brain and they have done this with stroke victems to help with recovery. Please talk to your drs about this and get all the opinions you can, maybe even from drs not in your hospital. Houstin Childrens hospital is amazing when it comes to childrens cariologists and neuro experts!

Our family has been in a similar position with our 3 yr Joel who went to live with Jesus 1/23/07. He was dx with a childhood cancer in Dec.06 and as we were at the hosp. for our 2nd round of chemo, Joel had a seizure, a tumor burst in his brain area, tests were done, but not all that could be done, the Dr's declared Joel braindead and sought to force us to take him off life support, even taking us to court. Our family stood with the scriptures that life is in the blood and with his heart beating and blood flowing, for us he was living.Joel's little heart quit beating on its own and he flew to Jesus. May the Lord give grace to stand for your sweet daughters life in a world where many times the medical society does not acknowledge truth of scriptures.

It is crazy how reading your blog and Mckmama's blog that I feel such an emotional attachment to your sweet babies. I have tears with you as I read what you are going through. I didn't check the blog first thing this morning and when my dear friend and I were in the car together she said, "Hey, you read baby Kayleigh's blog right?" and proceeded to tell me what was going on. I gasped. And we both said...it's like we know her personally. Maybe it is because we are parents too and know the love that only a parent can know. Maybe it's because we know the Lord and connect with you all on that level. Maybe it is simply because we are emotional individuals. But whatever it is...our hearts are with you and will keep on praying you through this!
lots of love

Hello Kayleigh and Family,
My name is Sarah and I am a college student in Michigan. I have been reading your blog for a very long time and praying for you all, but I have never had the nerve to comment, to tell you how your story is changing my life.

I grew up Catholic, but I went through a period of struggle with my faith after my uncle died when I was 11. I'm now 21 and I'm still trying to find that closeness I once had with God.

Your story, your courage, and your faith - it is renewing my desire to be close to God, and I cannot thank you enough for that. You are all amazing, strong, wonderful people, and Kayleigh - you are a beautiful little girl.

Thank you for helping to bring me back to God.

I am praying for you without ceasing, and I will ask my friends to do the same.

A friend in Michigan,
Sarah

After reading your post last night I could not sleep. I love your daughter so much I feel so connected to her as if she were my own. I cannot even begin to express how sorry I am to hear what is happening. It's beacuse of Kayleigh and little Stellan that I have become so close to God. After 33 years I am going to get baptized along with my 16 month old daighter and almost 5 year old son. Today we got a true blessing as my Mom was given wonderful news in reagrds to her health. I truly feel the power of prayer does work and I will pray and get on my knees everynight to pray for a full recovery of sweet little Kayleigh. He just cannot take her from all of us now she has more work here to do on earth. Your strenth and courage is amazing and I truly admire both of you. May God wrap his arms around all of you and lift you up in this trying time.
With sincere love,gratitude,and hope

I can't believe how emotionally attached I am to a family I have never met...a family who has no idea who I even am. It's amazing how many lives that little miracle baby has touched.

Praise God for the little things, like coming off pain meds, coming down on vent settings, and opening her eyes, and moving her extremities. If there was some kind of brain insult, there could be some residual swelling, which may come down over the next few days, and you may see some improvement. Kayleigh has proven herself a warrior, and God has proven himself miraculous, with that combination I am hopeful, and full of prayer, that Kayleigh will return to her old self soon! Thinking of the Freeman's today, as every day, a little heavy in the heart, but filled with the belief that this little peanut will be all smiles, for her first birthday party, when she celebrates at home with Mommy, Daddy, Allyson & Brandon. God Bless, Leslie in CT
