6/1/09 - Butterfly

At Kayleigh's memorial, I painted a picture with words of how she was in Heaven, sitting on our Lords lap while captivated by a butterfly which was flying in front of her face. The image of this butterfly has brought a blessing to our family. Since we have moved, we have seen more butterflies around our house and wherever we go than we have ever seen in our lifetime. It's Kayleigh. It's her constant reminder that she is here with us. It sends warm smiles through both of our faces.

There are so many great ideas sent our way and we are more than excited to sit down and think of what we want to do. One of the ideas had certainly sparked an interest and we are ironing out the details to see if this is something we can possibly do. Before we break the news to everyone of what we are going to do, we want to make sure it is definitely doable first.

On the other hand, many of you mentioned that I should write a book. I have been working on a book for several months now and before my computer crashed, which set me back a bit, I will be continuing to use my time this summer to finish it. Know any literary agents and/or publishers who might be interested? I need to start the process soon of hiring an agent who can find me a publisher. Many people said to just self publish it, but I want the world to be touched by our Angel, so let's try and get it in every book store around from the get-go. For those who know me, I don't just settle and I am a perfectionist, so I want nothing but the best for Kayleigh's story. But what proud parent doesn't, right?

If we can get through this process of publishing the book and the organization, then you all can expect some children's books to follow. I may write some books to help NICU families through their journey. Anything we can do to help, we will. We want to use what God has given us to glorify Him and help others.

Many of you write and speak of our strength and how it amazes you. Honestly, It amazes us too. Aimee and I have agreed that we actually feel guilty for not being as depressed as someone may normally be. Can you believe that? However, we are quickly reminded of God and how awesome He is and how wonderfully He used Kayleigh in her short period of time. Many people may not see the reasons and sometimes their loss could have come unsuspectingly, which I 100% agree that those two combinations can cause so much pain. God not only blessed us with a sweet little girl for a short amount of time, but He blessed us with a reason and He blessed us with some notice.

We sometimes wonder how lost we would be without the Lord in our lives. We wonder how upside down our lives would be right now for not knowing and trusting God for the decisions He makes. We have been to hell and back this year, but honestly it wasn't that bad because HE was holding our hand. What would this world have been like if Jesus hadn't come to show us what real and true love is. We would all be completely lost.

We are still getting settled in to our normal routine here and it may take some time, but I promise to post more often. I still have some changes to make to the blog too. Once the children are out of school, we will have a lot of family time and many memories to capture and share about. This is going to be one wild and crazy summer as us Freeman's share with you how much fun we can be.

I can't wait to get this party started :)

God Bless Everyone!

I love the butterfly analogy... it's awesome to think of her all around you, all the time. I believe all our little blessings are watching us from above.
Continuing to hold your family in prayer as your journey enfolds!

Whenever I think Kayleigh...I think AMAZING! Whenever I think of her family, I too think AMAZING. That is the one word that describes all of you, and you guys are such an inspiration to everyone. I know that people who are mad at God for their circumstances can certainly look at your blog and know there is a better way than to blame Him. I am so blessed to be your "blog" friend. We love you and God bless you and your family.

God bless you! I have to tell you that I have been thinking of you all day. I went for my 20 week Ultrasound today and learned that I was having a daughter and they told me she weighted ONE POUND! I immediately thought of your Kayleigh!

I also have to say, that your experience scares the life out of me and when I listen to you talk I'm in complete awe of your strength and Aimee's strength. I really want to say that I would remain peaceful and faithful to my God, but the truth is, I don't know if I could handle what you have been thru without turning my back in anger. It's a fear I have carried for a long time. I could lose anything, but please Lord don't take my children. Your life is my worst nightmare and I find so much peace and strength in your story, you are both an amazing witness to so many and I know God will richly bless you for sharing your testimony with people that truly need to hear it.

I'm crying like crazy now, and this is my longest blog comment ever, but much love you to and your family! A faithful follower and lover of your sweet baby girl, Emily in Sayre, PA

Still think of sweet Kayleigh everyday. She has become so much a part of our prayer routine. My boys had their friend Tyler over and we had a helium tank with some balloons left over from a birthday party. Next thing I know my 5 and almost 3 year old were telling Tyler, who's 7, about Kayleigh, and how she is in heaven playing with the angels. They filled some more balloons, let them go up to her, and sang her songs while playing their little keyboard. My friend's were in tears to see such sweetness, genuine faith driven care for little Miss Kayleigh. She has truly blessed my life, and the life of my children. I can't wait to read your book! I'm hoping you guys are settling in well. Love, Leslie in CT

I heard your butterfly illustration at Kayleigh's memorial and I loved it. You all spoke so eloquently but you really painted such a beautiful picture that I could truly see Kayleigh reaching for that butterfly and the Lord holding her tightly so she would not fall. So reading about all the butterflies that have crossed your path since this brings a smile to me face.

I hope and pray that you are able to get your book finished and published and that all of your ideas and projects come to be. It is no wonder Kayleigh was so amazing because she has truly amazing parents that are going to continue to impact this world on her behalf.

God has an amazing way of carrying us through pain. I felt guilty as well for not being sad all the time after my daughter passed. But I had a sense of relief and comfort knowing she wasnt suffering anymore and was in a place much better than earth :) She was born at 26 weeks so I related so much to your story, although I only had her for 3 short weeks she made a big impact and I couldnt have been more proud of my girl... God Bless your family and I cant wait to read more of what God is doing in your lives...

That's an interesting coincidence...I babysit every Monday for a family who lost their daughter also named Kayley. The parents have told her sister Tori that Kayley "rides on the wings of butterflies." When I have taken the kids to the park, hoardes of butterflies appear out of nowhere. It's quite amazing and we will often say "Hi Kayley!" So now Kayley and Kayleigh are sending butterflies together. What a beautiful image.

I think the butterfly imagery is great and it seems like she is still around you. I also think that it's kind of cool because the card I sent your family had a cut-out butterfly with a pink background, I picked it because I thought it was just perfect for Kayleigh.

I really enjoy writing and editing, but I only personally know people who write history or political books.

Glad to hear you are all holding up ok. It sounds like you have been quite busy since Kayleigh's service. I am happy for you and your new endeavors! It sounds like God is truly working in your lives.

Don't forget to allow yourself time to think and grieve. This may not be at all what you are doing but just from reading it sounds like you are keeping really busy and may not have allowed yourself time to really heal from this. I think what you are doing is wonderful in Kayleigh's memory. You have a talent for expressing yourself and giving glory to God.

When you mentioned butterflies, I thought of the poem I wrote for my Dad's service. We bought flower seeds embedded in cloth butterflies and I write the poem to hold the butterfly:

A caterpillar goes through life

Inching his way around

Squirming, feeling, wiggling,

He is so small

He longs for something more

Until he hears a voice

Somewhere deep inside

So he makes preparations

Enfolds himself in his cocoon

And the world goes dark.

After awhile the cocoon breaks

Colorful wings unfold

He awakens to find his gift

To fly…high above the ground

Surrounded by beauty

As he flies into the Heavens

He grins.

Finally…he is free.
Still praying for you & your family. Little Kayleigh is free & testing out her new beautiful wings while setting Angels hearts a flutter in the Heavens.

Your baby etched a spot in my heart forver and I will do anything for her and her family. As I plan for my son's 5th birthday on June 24th I can't help but think about June 23rd. Is there soemthing special we can all do on that day to remember sweet Kayleigh? I will never forget her birthday given it's the day before my son's and that day will always hold a special place for me. You are still in my thoughts are prayers daily. I miss so much seeing pictures of Kayleigh with her sweet smile and eyes that you could see all the way into her soul she truly was an angel and she is so missed!

I am sorry that I cannot help you in the book department. But I do have some words. A family I have known FOREVER recently lost their 11 year old angel, and her "song" since her funeral was "Butterfly" by Martina McBride. It talkes about the journey of a girl who struggled to shine, but did, and was as beautiful as a butterfly. It was perfect for Skylar, and is perfect for Kayleigh as well. You may have heard the song, but here is a link to one of my memorial posts on Skyler. I hope it touches you.

I wrote a comment, probably too long, giggle, and I must have deleted it. There is a purpose, for all things, that was the long and short of it, we miss Kayleigh, as all who have lost, miss their loved ones. The pain is immeasurable, yet the glory that faith gives us is so great and so sweet. I am so thankful to have found your blog, to remind me that faith, sweet faith is what gives me the strength and purpose to live this glorious life that has been given to me, good and bad, easy and hard....to live life to the fullest, to remember to be grateful and respectful of others..thank you, you are always in my thoughts and prayers..

I think that if Jesus is helping you heal and with acceptance than it's a good thing. I have struggled with my relationship with God since my only son died six months ago at six days old. It's terrible to question your relationship with the Lord when you are going through something as painful as losing a child. I admire the fact that you both have never wavered in your faith while dealing with Kayleigh's illness and death. I wish I had your conviction. Hugging you both.

Hello Freemans!

I was born in the Philippines and over there, there is a strong belief that when a brown butterfly swarms around your home, it is your loved one that have passed is visiting you. My father did when I was very young and every year around his birthday, a brown butterfly would show up at my brother's home. My brother is the only family member left in the Philippines and my father was buried there. This year, the butterfly hung around for a few days. My brother spoke to the butterfly and told him he will go to the cemetary to visit. The butterfly did not return after that. I know that butterfly you saw is Kayleigh. I got goosebumps when I read your blog. It's so wonderful. I hope she visits you often. Make sure to talk to the butterfly. :) God Bless your family!

When my daughter Kendall passed away last year, it was October and I saw more buterflies since she has passed than I have ever in my life. We even got a buterfly gravestone for Kendall and when I get new flowers at the cemetary, they have a buterfly in them. That definately reminds me of my daughter in the since she is free now of the suffering and she can spread her wings and go... I am sure it is something like that for you guys.

I think that when your child is so sick and you have such faith in God that you know she is ok now. I have cried my share of tears but I know that I have to get on with my life. It isnt a bad thing. I can tell you guys are dealing with everything in a healthy manner and some days will be worse than others... But you will get through everything with Gods help.

It may be a little early to ask, but are you going to have another baby? I have also been down a similar road and having another baby helped some. The new baby never replaced the child I lost but alot of my anger at god for taking my child was quelched. I now have 5 on earth and although I miss my son I feel complete and not like there is this huge gaping hole anymore. It was hard though when I had my first baby after loosing him and she looked just like him. I still pray for you and that you exist in the peace and the Grace of god.

I get it about the butterflies. My dad used to buy my mom butterfly figurines all the time. When he passed away in '02 at 50 years old we all of the sudden started seeing this white butterfly hanging around our front porch every morning and night. Then it started popping up other significant places we would go as if he was with us on our journey. I still get goosebumps everytime I see one. May God continue to bless you on this journey.

Dear Freemans,
I have followed your family's journey for the past several months and had some of my best prayer time as I prayed for Kayleigh and you during that time. I always ended with smiles, even when the news was not good and I felt peaceful in knowing that His hand was on everything. I don't know if that makes sense, but maybe it will help to confirm that our Father was indeed walking with your sweet baby every step of the way.
Your comments about the butterfly reminded me of a friend whose 8-year old daughter passed away from a brain tumor several years ago. At her memorial service, a butterfly landed on the little girl's mother's shoulder. The family took it as a sign that their Emily was with them and letting them know she was happy in her new home with the Lord. Every year since then, on the day of Emily's homegoing, a butterfly has come to the family at some point that day and landed on someone. I kinda brushed that off as perhaps the family wanting to sense Emily's presence and finding a way to get close to a butterfly. But then my grandmother passed away. She always loved rainbows and surrounded herself with them...decorations, jewelry, clothing, etc. On the day of her memorial service, we were leaving for the 2-hour drive when a storm came through rather suddenly and afterward a HUGE, vibrant double rainbow was in the sky. Not only that, but we could see it's origin in a small creek below my parents' house. It was literally yards away from us! We took pictures which are a treasure for my mom now. A year later, my cousin got married on the beach in Mexico. In the middle of the service, my aunt gasped and pointed out to the ocean where a rainbow had formed, though the skies were clear. Again, photos were taken and my cousin felt that Grandma had indeed been there for her special day. Whether the Lord is letting our loved one visit for a moment or whether He's touching us with His comfort in our time of need, I know that these things are indeed our Father's way of tenderly handling our hearts at their most vulnerable time. I'm sure you'll be seeing many more butterflies in the days ahead and God will continue to bring you all His best blessings as your hearts learn to beat in a new "normal" rhythm. You continue to be in my prayers and I am excited to read all the good reports that you'll have to share in the coming days.

Much love to all,
Jen G.

Our little girl is still with us, but lady bugs touch our hearts, like butterflies do yours. They are supposed to mean good luck. I had one trapped in my veil on our wedding day, and when my preemie was born, there was one on her hospital "bed" the day she was born. We were amazed how a single lady bug made it to the 4th floor of the hospital! There have been many special moments like this.

I hope you do write that book. I would for sure buy it and read it!

Today I am going with my husband as he's signing papers for deployment (he's a soldier in the army national guard) and I feel totally at peace. Typically the idea of him being deployed would have me as an emotional wreck, but having followed Kayleigh's story this year I've seen what an awesome God we have and I feel %100 at peace. Safe in His arms and His will. . .

I'm looking forward to your book being published! Please come to MN and do a book signing or let us order books signed by the whole family- that would be wonderful :) I'm going to buy one for my daughter since she's the only reason I found Aimee on babycenter in the first place :) I also want her to be touched by kayleigh's story like it has so many people :)

Your butterfly story brought both tears and a smile because I believe. When my sister passed away a few short years ago,she chose the spots in which she wanted her ashes released...the first was a favorite fishing spot that she and her twin enjoyed,we had to park at the top of the road and walk down a trail to get to "Judy's Rock"...as soon as we got out of our vehicles we were met by these lovely butterflies, they swarmed around my sisters and I the entire time, one sister and I just said that it was like our Dad,grandparents and all the little babies who had gone were once again with us.When we left the lake we went to the cemetary where our grandparents and my sisters baby daughter were buried, once again we were greeted with these lovely butterflies. We then get back to my sisters home and waiting for us is ONE beautiful butterfly...we all just smiled and said hello to Judy.Whenever I see a single butterfly I just smile and say hello.A beautiful and perfect symbol sent from above.

A little saying for you to have:

"A butterfly alights beside us like a sunbeam and for a brief moment its glory and beauty belong to our world. But then it flies on again and though we wish it could have stayed, we feel very fortunate to have seen and felt its beauty"

I ran across your blog from another blog. I was immediatly drawn in when I realized your sweet little one had returned to Jesus. Then I realized your wife's name is Aimee. That is my name also and we lost our sweet little one Hannah 8 yrs. ago. (wow, that's hard to believe.)

I would love to talk to you via email. I facilitate a support group called Glory Babies in my area. (www.glorybabies.com) A group in another town actually built a park in honor of their babies. Please email me if you would like any additional ideas.

I am so sorry for your loss. There are no other words that I can even say. Some days are hard; some are not. Cling fast to the Lord because He is unmovable and unshakeable. He will hold you up when you cannot even get out of bed. Please know I will be lifting you up in my prayers.

There's a family, in my church, who lost a baby at 5 months to SIDS! When she found out her baby had died, the mother sat outside in disbelief and devastation. As she gazed around feeling like she was in a dream, she saw a butterfly land near her; and she knew it was a sign from GOD! From that moment on, she referred to her son as The Butterfly Boy! Butterflies are symbols of new life....that's what her son and Kayleigh now have....NEW AND PERFECT LIFE!

I have tried several times to comment on your blogs. I have a hard time putting my thoughts into words. I think of your family & Kayleigh everyday. I have never been a religous person, but something is changing for me. You have given me the inspiration to seek god, to hold tight to my babies and my loved ones...so many things. So thank you a million times, thank you..This is a little story of the butterfly I would like to share:

Since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly can not reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all.In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom, the Great Spirit always grants the wish. So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, the wish will be taken to the heavens and be granted.

We bought our home a few months ago, and are working on our flower beds. This past weekend, I mentioned to my husband that I saw a butterfly bush at a store a while back. I thought it would be neat since our little girls love butterflies. Our oldest daughter has been really touched by Kayleigh, and we've thought about planting a new flower in the garden for Kayleigh. I think a butterfly bush is definitely in order, don't you? I thinks it's amazing!

I am still praying for you as you continue to make the transition without sweet Kayleigh. I know that God will give you the strength that you need. The best part is that you KNOW you will see your precious little girl one day when we all get to heaven. Glory!

I just came across your blog and I am so touched. You have so many wonderful friends and family members who love and support you and your family, they have loved you in the past, in the present, and they will in the future. That is so beautiful. The journeys in life can be difficult, but the love and support helps to make those valleys a little less frightening. God bless you.

I so admire your strength and acceptance of Gods love and will. He definately had plans not only for Kayleigh, but for your family. I find it absolutely amazing, beyond words, how Kayleighs life has impacted so many, and total strangers at that. What ever you choose to do with your gift to spread Gods word, I know it will continue to impact people just as much as if Kayleigh was here on earth.
God Bless You,

Wishing you all the best in whatever you decide to do. I pray for your family regularly and I miss seeing Kayleigh's sweet face when I check in. I think it's wonderful you've been seeing more and more butterflies....I have to share with you that the other day I saw the most beautiful rainbow and I immediately thought of sweet Kayleigh and Cora (a little sweet girl that lost her life to cancer at 11 months old in Kansas)....I just know in my heart that it was a sign from them to keep praying for them and their families and that they are in God's hands and doing just fine. Looking forward to more beautiful updates from you all. God bless.

I am so glad to hear you guys are doing ok. I sometimes wonder why I am still feeling so blue about Kayleigh. I cannot seem to get that little butterfly out of my head. She is so lucky to of had you as her parents. You are so strong and I believe Kayleigh knew that with all that she was in her short time here on earth.

I cant wait to read your book. You can bet that I will be one of your first customers.

I love you all and pray for you every day and will continue to always do so.

We missed the chance to let our balloons go on the day of Kayleigh's memorial, but still wanted to participate somehow. I found some left over 1st bday girl balloons from my daughter Hadley's party a few days ago & though 'what if I let these go on what would'vew been sweet little Kayleigh's 1st bday?' I just wanted to make sure that would be okay with you guys. Your story has been such a reminder to our family that God is here even when we don' feel him & we need to be thankful for all of the time we have together. Thank you!

I love the book idea, and getting it published. Little Brown, Back Bay Books and FSGBooks have done the majority of "independent style books" that I have in my library collection, and not the traditional novel.

The butterflies are such a beautiful symbol of Kayleigh's presence in your (and many other's) lives. Thank you for that gift of sharing.

Adam & Aimee,

I still think of your family everyday and sweet little Kayleigh. Scarlett turns one on Sunday, and I had been trying to decide what theme for her party - and it now will be butterfly themed in honour of the amazing Kayleigh..... Scarlett and I still watch your videos and remember the beautiful little girl that has been almost as much a part of the family as Scarlett has - we will never let go of her memory and what her precious life taught us all. I think your book will be extraordinary, just like the entire Freeman family. I look forward to following your family's journey for some time to come, we would now be lost without you. Take Care, all our love Always xx

Hey guys,
I don't really know what to say, but that I am so thankful that I came across your blog back in February and I am so thankful to have been able to share in Kayleigh's Story. I have a six month old who was 6 weeks early and was in the NICU for 17 days, so Kayleigh's journey has really touched my heart and I want you to know that what you have done here has really brought me so much closer to God as I am sure it has many others as well.
I can't wait for your book to come out. And I want you to know that I will help you with whatever you need help doing. I am up in Virginia, and I will continue to spread the word of sweet baby Kayleigh and what a blessing she is.

Thank you so much!!!

Love,

I will continue to pray for you guys and to tell everyone how much Kayleigh Anne has touched my life and gotten me closer to God. I just can't wait to meet her in heaven and thank her!

We have my grandma as a butterfly, too! Crazy how often they come around now that we know what they represent :) Love that!

I am new in my journey as a Christ follower and my life has been turned upside down and then turned upside down again and again :) What an awesome ride it has been and there is no where else I'd rather be.

Death has such a different meaning to me now that my faith is in Jesus Christ. When I read this post it made me feel more normal! I feel the same way now a days. People think I'm crazy for being joyful about death.... in my opinion, man they are the lucky ones huh?! How amazing to know EXACTLY where your little girl is right now. She's looking down on you guys (as well as everyone who has been mourning her passing- as well as those being joyful about it) saying, "It's SO amazing up here!!! Hurry up and come join me!" :)

Thanks for sharing her beautiful journey with all of us. She is one special blessing! You guys are so great. Prayers as you continue your journey.

Endless Blessings to you all!
Suzanne

I have a friend who's wife recently passed away at a hospice house (hospice house of the upstate, Anderson SC) and they recently had a butterfly release of about three hundred butterflies and he voiced the impact it left on him of his wife. It is always nice to be able to connect in a small way - even in a butterfly.

I found your blog shortly before your precious daughter went to be with the Lord. This past Sunday the sermon I heard was Why Does God Allow Suffering. Your family came to mind on the last bullet point of turning the bitter into something better. I pray that I will be able to turn bitter into something better when placed on the same path.

God bless you as you go forth.

Hello I live in Idaho and I am a friend of Ani Karg. I have been following your blog for a while now. I was so saddened and sorry to hear of your lost. I had a baby 1 year ago and she had complications at the beginning also. Nothing as serious as your sweet little angel, but I understand the stress and turmoil that a parent can feel when their child is hurting and struggling. I wanted to tell you that my hat is off to you for posting how much you love Jesus and how you need God in this crazy world. We need more of God in this world instead of those who would like to see him gone. Thank you! Without God we are nothing. I am happy to see that your family is able to cope with your loss in such a positive way.

HI, MY NAME IS JULIE AND I AM NICU NURSE IN PHX, AZ. I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS. I WORK WITH OUR "ANGELS FOUND PROGRAM" AS A GRIEF COUNSELOR FOR OUR GRIEVING FAMILIES. WE MAKE FOLLOW UP CALLS AT ONE WEEK AND 1 YEAR TO CHECK ON OUR FAMILIES. ONE MOTHER TOLD ME OF A WONDERFUL WAY THEY REMEMBERED THERE DAUGHTER ,(THEIR LITTLE BUTTERFLY.) THEY PLACED A BUTTERFLY OF SOME SORT IN EVERY ROOM IN THEIR HOME. SOME WERE BIG AND OBVIOUS, OTHERS VERY TINY,AND GUESTS HAD TO DO A "WHERE'S WALDO" TYPE SEARCH TO FIND IT. I THOUGHT THIS WAS A WONDERFUL IDEA. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME. THE BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR SEARCH FOR THE BEST WAY TO CONTINUE TOUCHING LIVES.

I hope you guys get this despite being a comment on an earlier post..

I rarely see butterflies here. Especially at this time of the year since its so hot. I was out back with my mom, as we had the kids play before it got TOO hot, and I had the pleasure of seeing four different butterflies. I know it was Kayleigh coming by to say hello, since just last night I caught myself up on her story. (I stopped reading April 5th when I went into labor and had my daughter Abigail.) I cried many tears last night and rejoiced when she went to be with the Lord. I only wish we could have done a balloon release as well.

Anyways thought I would let you know, Kayleigh has graced me with fluttering by here in (hot and) sunny Mesa, Az.

God bless and I will be thinking and praying for you and your family.

I am so amazed at your butterfly story. Can I tell you when my grandfather passed away I was so scared, you see he was more like my father and it was extremly hard on me. I would often sit by his grave and cry and just talk to him. Well one day I begged God for a sign that he was near me...I asked God to please let me know my Pepa was still by my side every step of the way...sure enough a butterfly appeared and it landed on me. I knew that was my sign. I knew that was God's way of telling me that everything was going to be ok and that Pepa would always be near me. I often see butterflies now when I need my Pepa the most...God is so amazing and he knows just the things to let us know our loved ones are by our side!!!!

I love your blog, Love your strength and your faith!!! You are a true inspiration to myself as well as others!

God bless you,
