9/18/08 - Surgery Scheduled

Tomorrow morning (Friday) at 10:30AM, Kayleigh is scheduled for surgery. The doctors want to open Kayleigh up to see what the underlying factors that are causing her to feeds to back up. The last GI test did not determine if there was a narrowing in her intestines, but the contrast has not exited her body like it should have, so that is throwing up a big red flag. If the doctor finds something, they will fix the problem right then and there. If they don't find anything, I am afraid at what may be causing this and what would happen from here on out.

The incision will be across the stomach and above her belly button, so she will have a scar. I told Aimee not to worry because she will not be taking her shirt off until she is married anyways (ha-ha). I feel that the scar will be very small by the time she grows up. I will call it her battle wound.

In the long run, no one wants their child to go through surgery, but we feel it is the best option for her to get over this feeding issue. We need her to grow and grow faster! If she continues to stay on the TPN (Triple Mix Nutrients), it can cause more damage to her system than we need.

So please pray for our little one as the surgery isn't suppose to last but for around an hour or so. We will certainly be on pins and needles until we get some news. I am sure you all will be too, so I will try to get back and post before too late.

This journey has been a trying time for our family and as I try to make jokes and give you guys a laugh, I am really freaking out inside. I guess it is my way to cope with all the stress. Some call us strong, but the strong one is not me. Aimee is my true strength and she is the reason I have not gone off the deep end yet. Some might call me crazy because of my poopy song and dance, but you know what? Your right! This is a wild and crazy situation, but without Aimee there to love me, strengthen me and help keep my eyes on the right path, I would have done a lot more crazy things than that. She is a Godsend and I am so blessed to have such a wonderful woman in my life. With God joining us together, she is the reason I have eternal life because without her, I would have been preparing for eternity in hell. She keeps me closer to perfect than anyone ever will. I am truly in awe of how someone would ever hook me up with the most amazing person in the world. I love you sweetheart and thank you for loving me!

Thank you everyone for all your thoughts and prayers as we go through a tough day tomorrow.

God Bless,

The Freemans :)

I really feel for you guys. Its not easy seeing your small preemie go through surgery. I think Anthony was about Kayleigh's size when he had his PDA surgery. Tough stuff. But you and Aimee will lean on each other. One day Aimee will be the strong one and the next day it will be you being strong for her. Thats what makes you a good couple. Sharing the load.

I will be on to check how Kayleigh did with her surgery tomorrow and hopefully you guys get an answer.

Aimee, Adam, and Kayleigh,

I pray that tomorrow the surgery is fruitful. I would rather them find something wrong than nothing, and then the outcome will be devastating. Maybe there is nothing wrong at all.

Adam, you are not crazy, everyone deals with their stress in their own way. If it helps, keep doing it.

I will check in here all day long to see if you had a chance to post. My stomach is in knots, I can only imagine how you guys are feeling.

Kayleigh, ma'am you stay strong, and show them docs that it is only a minor problem and nothing more. Something that is fixable. Because then you can eventually get mama moo moo!!!!

My prayers are with you guys.

Wade and I are praying hard for Kayleigh. I think this is what is going to help her tummy out and what will get her back to the breast milk. We love you guys and we are praying for God to cover you with his strength and peace.

My little guy charlie was a 25 weeker and had to have intestinal surgery. He has a scar across his belly. They were concerned about NEC, but it turned out to be a perforation in his bowel. He had an ostomy for 65 days before it healed and they could put it together. We've been through the contrasting experiments and even a worrisome fear of Hirschprung's Disease.
He's getting older and the scar is still there, we call it his battle scars and joke that chicks love guys with scars.
She'll have a cool story to tell when she's older.
I will pray for her that they figure out what's going on in there!

I'm happy you guys have each other to love and lean on! Keep focused on that! God will take care of the rest.

You may not feel so strong at the moment, but I have no doubt that you, like your daughter and wife, are a survivor! You have all been through so much, it doesn't seem fair...but God has a plan, and through your painful experiences we are all learning much about faith, patience, trust and love. I know that you must be a strength for your wife, just as she is for you.
Today, as every day, Kayleigh is in our thoughts and prayers, may this sweet little girl come through all this with the answers that are needed. Praying for you and Aimee that you will continue to find strength in each other's love, and peace through these most nerve wracking days.

I'll say a prayer that they find the answers to her digestive problems and an easy solution at the same time.

Good luck tomorrow and I'll be praying all day long!

I will be on pins and needles today, luckily I don't have school so I can check back often. Of course I will constantly be praying (as always) for not only you all and Kayleigh but for the doctors and nurses. Hopefully they can get in there just this one time, fix the problem and Kayleigh will progress. She's such a fighter and my daily faith renewer. I come and look at her when things feel like they are getting out of control.

Good luck little Miss Kayleigh and God Bless

As a mom to a micro-preemie myself, I can definitely relate to your story. Your gorgeous daughter even looks similar to my own! I cannot imagine the turmoil you are all going through with the upcoming procedure, but know that my thoughts are with you. Wishing you all the best,

You guys don't know me, but I've been following Kayleigh's story since you guys were first told that she wasn't expected to survive (I was told at 7 weeks pregnant that my son would never survive and he's now a wonderfully healthy 6 month old, so while I don't know about everything you've gone through with Kayleigh but I know how it is to be told that your baby will never make it). Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. My family just got back from our evacuation from Hurricane Ike and we still have no Internet, but I'm using every chance I get to check on Kayleigh's progress (I'm in front of our library right now using their WiFi).

Aimee and Adam-

Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you today as Kayleigh undergoes surgery.

I have been in your shoes with having to do an exploratory laparotomy to find out what is causing poop issues.

Gavin had a double bowel perforation that required an illeostomy and he had a bag for 3 months. They then did surgery to reverse it and put his intestines back together.

I hope the surgeons are able to fix the issue while they are in there and that it does not result in an ostomy. If it does however, you will be ok. Gavin did just fine with the ostomy and the bag and then the surgery to reverse.....

Know that we are thinking of you and you will be in our prayers today.

Update when you can.
