11/4/08 - 3:03pm - Post Surgery Update

It is with great excitement and pleasure to announce that Kayleigh's surgery went better than perfect. There is no ECMO and there is no pacemaker. Her heart started back perfectly and she is doing just fine. Her lung pressures have actually dropped a little already, which is amazing. They did leave her chest open to allow her heart and lungs to work without any extra pressure from the swelling and constriction of her chest cavity.

Her lungs are working great and she is breathing good on the vent still. They were able to control the bleeding very well, so she didn't have an issue like last time with the cath procedure (Probably because the VSD is closed now). Her urinary output is better than expected, but they said it may slow down or stop completely. They have a catheter in there in case it does and some diuretics will help also. She does have an arterial line in her leg, tubes coming out of her chest and abdomen, but she is doing great for the most part.

So all in all, there is a lot of great news here and I hope I explained it well enough for right now. You will have to forgive me because it is so hard to concentrate and remember everything when all your hearing are positive information over and over again. If I missed something, I will be sure to add it later.

This is to show that with prayer, ANYTHING is possible. Not to be a party pooper, but even though this surgery was a complete success, we are not out of the woods yet. This whole week, but more importantly, the next 48 hours are the most critical. Please keep praying and hope for the best with her recovery. I am just so stoked that there are no major issues, so that only means she has less on her plate to recover from.

THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!!

We can not say it enough. With your prayers, we have been able to move mountains :)
We are forever in debt to all of you for caring so much. Aimee and I are going to be able to see her soon, so I will update and educate you all later with what we learn in the CVICU (cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit). I am looking forward to it!

Thank you and God Bless!!!

PRAISE THE LORD! Nothing is too big for Him to handle...You will have continued prayers coming from the Benedict household till Kayleigh is home sleeping in her own crib! Can't wait to hear continued updates. How long are they thinking before they close her chest? Is that going to be another major surgery, or is that a no big deal thing? Is that the last of her projected procedures?

Anonymous said...

Yeah! We have been praying for Kayleigh all day and are so excited to hear that surgery went well. We'll continue to pray for her recovery. NC

Nikki,

The chest will remain open for a few days unless the swelling goes down quickly and they find no other reasons to leave it open. Their main concern is putting extra pressure on the heart and to give them easy access incase something goes wrong.

Thanks :)

How wonderful! My daughter (born 9/13) was born with 3 heart defects (VSD, Coarctation of the Aorta, and PDA) and is a CVICU (and open heart surgery) graduate! These next few days/weeks will be tough no doubt, but you will get through it. They told us in the beginning that it's 2 steps forward one step back process, and that was absolutely the case. Soon the arterial lines will go ... pacing wires (if she has them), vent, cath, chest tube will be gone - and this will be a distant memory (maybe not distant - but you know!)

Good luck to you all, little Kayleigh is in our prayers!

Thank you, God for this fabulous news! Praying that the worst is far behind little Kayleigh and for a fast & easy recovery.
You are such a fighter, Kayleigh! Rest easy this week and get all healed up so you an get home to your Mommy and Daddy!

Adam said...

Sarah, not a huge deal. All it should take are some sutures or staples. Not sure what they will use. It should be a few days, but hopefully sooner :)

That is the last of the procedures, but they are keeping an eye on a hernia she has. They might have to fix that, but it isn't another heart surgery.

Thanks :)

Phillipians 4:13

I haven't been able to post all day, but I have been following by my phone. Praise GOD! I'm so glad that things have went so well today...now let's all get busy praying for the next 48 hours!

I'm busy making little Miss Kayleigh hats for her to wear once she gets a little bigger (I'm sure she has a ton now). I'll be sending a message through Facebook once I get them ready to be sent. (I'm under Kelly Hardin).

Adam and Aimee....stay strong. Lean on the Lord and each other. Give Kayleigh a big hug from the Hardin household. Get some rest one of these days! :)
