Oh, she is so cute sucking her fingers!!!

I am a BBC mommy too. A long time ago, actually a couple days before Kayleigh was born, I ran across a thread saying that Aimee was going into the hospital and I followed it here and have kept up with everything that has gone on since. You both are amazing parents and I'm awed by how much progress Kayleigh has made in the last months.

You truly inspire me to be more patient (I take care of my disabled sister and my patience with her isn't always the best) and to enjoy my little boy even more than I already do. He was born in November after many years of infertility and I consider him my little miracle.

A perfect comment for the picture is: "HMMMM new flavor today!!!" Ha ha!! I've been following Kayleigh'story for a couple of weeks now and I find myself worrying over her as if she was my own child! I can't stay off of your blog!!! I hope she won't need a trache. Maybe there's some sort of ring that can be put in her tubes to hold them open? My niece was a few weeks early and her windpipe got crushed during the delivery and she couldn't breathe unless she was crying. The doctors put in some ring, I don't remember what they called it, to pop it back and hold it open.
I also just wanted to say that I'm very impressed with how well you guys have held up during your journey with Kayleigh! I would be a basket case!! My little girl was full term, but I was told that I had an infection in my amniotic fluid and they needed to check to see if my baby had the infection and that if she did she could have respiratory problems and be in the NICU "for weeks and weeks" the doctor said. As a precaution they had already marched her up to the NICU before they informed me of the situation. I was still sitting on the delivery table when they dropped the bomb on me after 24 hours of labor and I actually had a mild heart attack, I was so upset!!! She turned out to be fine, but was jaundiced really badly so they kept her in the NICU for a week, then I took her home the day before Thanksgiving '06 and everything's been just fine ever since. But that NICU was soooooo scary!! All those billi-lights and alarms going off and doctors discussing a heart sugery for a premee the next row over and the mother behind me frantically calling out to a very tiny translucent-skinned boy: "Can you hear me? Mommy's here!" And I was sitting there on pins and needles waiting for my baby's blood test to come back about that infection and scared they'd be putting her on a respirator at any second. And if I had had to endure that for more than a week I would have lost my mind!!! I salute you guys for your bravery and I hope Kaleigh comes home soon!

I have been keeping up with Kayleigh from the beginning and can't believe how much she has grown. I know that God will see to the right choice being made. If they do all of the procedures at one time maybe that would get her home sooner!?!? How much does she weigh now? Would it be possible for you to post another picture of Kayleigh holding your ring? It would be interesting to compare it to the picture you have at the top. May God Bless.

She is growing so much. I have and will continue to pray for her healing. I do have a question though. If they end up doing the trach will it be reversable if everything heals?

HI I just found your blog this evening and wanted to let you know that a trach tube isn't as bad as you think. My dd Lydia is 8 and healthy and has a trach. She stopped needing the vent as soon as her trach tube was placed. I know our situations are different but there is a new "normal" after all of this I promise. Keep the faith! Love to you and your family, Tracie

Kristie said...

Adam, I don't know if you will read this comment or not. I feel compelled to tell you this. God said for you NOT TO BECOME DISCOURAGED.....he has it all under control. He said the trac is necessary for Kayleigh to start her healing process. It is a way for her to become healed.
So please bear with it and keep in mind she will get better.

Please know that every time I pray I lift Kayleigh up in prayer. I am amazed at this miracle that God has performed in her life. God didn't put Kayleigh on this earth for nothing. She has a great and mighty work to do. All this medical stuff that is going on with her is her testimony. One day you will see.

Know this I am praying for her and all of you as well.

Still praying for Kayleigh.

I sent you an email a couple of weeks ago about the tracheostomy situation. Five years ago, we were in similar shoes. The last thing I wanted was for my baby girl to have a trach. I'd worked in a nursing home, doing therapy with trached residents, so it's not like I had no idea what to expect. I'd prayed, begged, and pleaded with God. Yet, when the ENT (another world renowned surgeon who goes on regular mission trips to help kids with cleft palate anomalies and other ENT-related issues) told me a trach was the necessary next step, I felt like the voice of God told me, "Hey, this is My plan, and My plan is always for your good."

Anyway, it's a scary thing, thinking about bringing a trached child home, but, it's not so bad. It really isn't. We learned a lot, and God used the experience to teach us so many valuable lessons. Just last weekend, my husband gave the sermon at a friend's church, talking about our experiences. A couple of years ago I was asked to speak to my friend's OB nursing class. So many people, not just us, have been blessed by what we've been through.

My understanding is that Kayleigh has a g-tube right now, is that correct? Somethings to think about (if you haven't already gone over this, which you probably have, in which case you can just disregard it) are the g-tube vs j-tube vs nissen. The Nissen is a big surgery. Lily has not had it done, although MANY kids born with her condition have had it done. The facility we were at prefers not to put kids through it if they don't have to, while an expert in this condition (who works at a different hospital in our area) does them practically standard on any kid who shows symptoms of reflux, as that can cause recurrent issues at the surgical site. Ask about the chances of it needing to be redone at some point (because I know the failure rate can be problematic in some cases). If Kayleigh has a j-tube, she may not necessarily need the Nissen. If she gets the Nissen, she may just be able to stick with a g-tube, which would allow her tummy to feel full, likely making a transition to oral eating easier. There are pros and cons either way. Another thing to think about is whether or not they feel Kayleigh would be a candidate for an LTR (Laryngeal Tracheal Reconstruction) down the road (usually they want kids bigger first), and how long they think she may need the trach. We were told about 3 years with Lily, but she was decannulated at 18 months (after about 14 months of having a trach), after having an aortopexy.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. I'm happy to answer anything that I can.

God bless you all,
Robin

I want to tell you that you scared the (I don't know....everything) out of me when I saw the Thank you added to the top of the page. I read it in pure terror. I felt the panic coming over me, but was so thankful when I got to the end and saw that all is well. Atleast, I now know that I am still alive....Praying for Kayleigh everyday. She is such a cutie. Kayleigh is older than my daughter by a good 2 months, but still smaller than my Brooke when she was born. I pray she is able to overcome all of this and grow up to be as big as my Brooke one day. Thanks for sharing your journey.
