2/2/09 Post Tracheostomy Surgery

The surgery went well today and Kayleigh was surprisingly wide awake shortly after she made it back to her room. The nurses had to administer some pain medication because Kayleigh was starting to get a little irritated throughout the day. The procedure took less than an hour to complete and everything went without a hitch.

Kayleigh is currently coming down on her vent settings and heading back to a normal state. She is doing such a great job through this and we are so proud of her. It was quite overwhelming at first to see Kayleigh with the trach, but I think it really got to me when she was wide awake so soon. We thought she was going to be out for at least the first full day, so when we saw her wiggling around and getting irritated, of course the first thing you think of is that she is pain. But, with her blood pressure looking good and her heart rate not shooting through the roof, she was doing fine. It was good to see nothing in her mouth or the tape strip under her nose that goes across her face.

Thank you everyone for all of your prayers early this morning and throughout the day. It means a lot to us and there is no doubt that with all the prayers delivered, God received them because Kayleigh and the surgeon did one wonderful job through this procedure.

Praise God!

God Bless,

We're so glad to hear everything went so well today! And how amazing Kayleigh was so wide awake so soon. I can see why it was overwhelming to see her with the trach at first. It was a bit for me so I can't even imagine what this has been like for mommy and daddy!

This may be a really stupid question that has already been answered somewhere but is there any estimate as to how long Kayleigh will have to have the trach?

Thank you all for your prayers. To answer a couple questions, Kayleigh does have a little bit of jaundice still, but I guess it shows more in some light then others. Also, her purlish color tonight could be from swelling/Adema.

The amount of time Kayleigh will have the trach is unknown. It could be a year or it could be for life, but let's pray she outgrows the bronchialmalacia and can get the trach removed as soon as possible.

Thank you so much and God Bless,

Adam

Thanks so much for the updates and pictures. AND, she's on her back and not upset I see. I'm guessing she'll have to spend more time on her back in the coming days/weeks due to the procedure.

My son & I have spent several mths in the NICU so I can somewhat relate to what you're going through. Your strength and love for each other is also very inspiring. Kayleigh looks great! I have a feeling she'll really start to pink up and get way more active in the next few weeks. Just having the trach in place, will make it easier for her to do some of the things a "healthy" baby can, things she couldn't do with the ET tube gagging the back of her throat.

Every bit of tape and every tube that goes away...I used to get so excited about those things! It will be awesome when Kayleigh doesn't need her NG tube anymore!

I want to encourage you to consider the chain trach ties. Talk to an RT about them. The nice thing is that there are fewer issues with skin breakdown because they allow more air circulation. Also, they only need to be changed every 2 weeks, when you do a trach change. The one thing to watch for is that the clasp doesn't cut into her neck. I used to make sure I placed the clasp kind of right over the little hole on the side of the trach where you thread the tie through, and we never had any problems with it.

Kayleigh is one little fighter, that's for sure! Praise God she's doing so well!!

God bless,
Robin

P.S. To the person who asked about whether or not Kayleigh has a hole in her neck now: The answer is yes. It's probably about the size of a toddler finger (it's not very big, but big enough for the "cannula" or the tube part of the trach to fit through) that goes through the neck into the windpipe (trachea). The tube (as well as the vent pressures) help to stint her airway open so Kayleigh can breathe. Hope that helps to answer your questions!

Wow! what a blessing. I remember when my son was the NICU and he had brain surgery to place a VP shunt in his ventricles...Like you I thought for sure he would be out for the day...when they let me into his pod to see him after surgery he was awake and smiling!!! all I could do was cry and say "This child is my hero." Just as your sweet Kayleigh is and she will over come all this...I know it. Then when she is 3Yrs old like mine is and has a mind of her own...you will be frustrated...but in the same breath be thanking GOD still and forever will... for allowing you and Amiee to be her parents...because Adam you and Amiee as well as your children at home are all HERO'S...I will keep praying for you all.

Hey anonymous....shut up will ya?? The Freemans really do want prayers for their baby girl...like anyone else. They aren't using Kayleigh or her followers!!!! You know WHY they say things like that??!?! People these days beleive and do anything Oprah says...so if she says "Go to Kayleigh's site" guess where half of amreica's women are? You guessed it. Therefore, Kayleigh recieves more prayers! See how that all works?
And the Freemans are VERY sincire in their Faith...What if God gave them Kayleigh so that their true colors would show and they would turn to God? I don't know what His reason for all this is, but it doesn't matter what "type" you are...if you get to God, no one should judge you on HOW you get/got there!!
On a lighter note...
STAY STRONG BABY GIRL!! You are doing great... show this preemie disorder who's boss!!!!!!

MY COMMENT IS FOR THE "RELIGOUS" PEOPLE THAT QUESTION YOUR RELIGION. I HAVE A 32 WEEK PREEMIE AND IT TAKES A LOT OF PRAYER TO GET THROUGH THE EXPERIENCE. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE A SITUATION WHERE YOU NEED MORE GUIDANCE FROM GOD AND HE IS ALWAYS THERE FOR YOU. JUST LIKE THE WONDERFUL POEM "FOOT STEPS", SOMETIMES HE NEEDS TO CARRY YOU. LEAVING YOUR CHILD IN THE HOSPITAL AND GOING HOME EACH NIGHT TO AN EMPTY ROOM AND TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHY IT HAS TO BE THIS WAY. IF YOU HAVE RELIGION IN YOUR HEART, YOU WOULD NEVER BE THIS UNKIND TO A FAMILY THAT HAS HAD THEIR LIFE TORN APART AND NEED HELP. I THINK YOU SHOULD PRAY ON THAT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. IF YOU DON'T WALK IN THEIR SHOES DON'T JUDGE. GOD NEVER JUDGES! BEST OF LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, I WILL CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR YOU.

Praise God! One more obstacle He has brought Kayleigh through. So, as her prayer warriors, what is now that we have to pray for Kayleigh specifically for. Besides the obvious of getting that baby home. Is the lung issue now her only major obstacle? What exactly needs to happen now?

I'm so glad that Kayleigh is doing well. The photos that you have posted post-trach really touched me, and I can imagine how overwhelming it would have been for you. A tracheostomy would have been the only way my baby boy might have survived, but the med team would have only had minutes or seconds to accurately diagnose and perform the procedure. My baby boy was born in Sept 08, full term, and supposedly healthy, but just 45 minutes later, chanting prayers and begging God to let him stay, he was born to the angels. The cause was a rare congenital condition, only about 50 or so documented cases in the world. Lucky us.
I pray for Kayleigh's continued improvement, and for God to remain by her side, and yours.

xx

I have been reading about Kayleigh for quite a while. I agree with you that the Lord is in control and has cradled little Kayleigh in his arms since the beginning. He loves you and he will never leave you.

I have a 30 week preemie who is now going on 14 months old. She spent 6 weeks in the NICU and that made my faith more strong than it has ever been. It put my belief and faith in God in stone. I can't imagine not taking my baby home for so long. I ache for the anonymous, cowardous posters. It hurts me to see someone who hasn't found God and who has such little warmth in their heart.

I really admire you guys, and my faith takes another huge leap as I continue to read about Kayleigh. It makes me smile to see how much God loves us ALL and especially how he gives us such amazing miracles, such as Kayleigh, to bring joy and love into our hearts and to help us share it with others when they need it.

I'll be reading!

I have been following your little girl's journey for awhile now...this is my first time commenting. I pray for you, your little girl, your family, and the doctors. My husband went through a life threatening illness while I was pregnant with our first, and it was the power of prayer and God's awesome grace that saved him. I am certain of it. I am writing to tell the person(s) who questioned your faith that you probably need to spend your time working on your own relationship with Jesus. Volunteer at a local hospital...see how a serious illness affects a family...emotionally, financially, spiritually. It turns your life upside down. It is our jobs as disciples of Christ to help those in need...whether it's by prayer, our time, our talent, and yes...our treasure. God told us to not hold onto our posessions. To use that for the good of others. I will start praying for you. I will pray that the burdens you carry are released from your heart so that you can see the truth.

Kayleigh! Stay strong. You are an amazing little girl and we know God has an amazing plan for you! We hope you continue to let us stay along for the journey! Thank you for letting us be a part of your story. :)

Your daughter is precious. I am and will continue to pray for your sweet baby as she develops and grows in the NICU. She looks like a fighter and I know God is going to carry you through this time. One day you are going to look back and not be able to grasp how you ever made it through this time. I speak from my own experience. I delivered quadruplets at 26 1/2 weeks. Our last one to leave the hospital after five months was trached. And I'll have you know...despite everything she has been through...she is the strongest person I know. Last summer she had reconstructive airway surgery and was finally successfully decanulated and eating on her own, no gtube. She is 3 1/2 now. I don't say any of this to scare you..just to reasure you and encourage you that no matter what..the tiniest of babies can be the strongest. Know that your preious baby Kayleigh has a special place in my heart. HUGS!
