4/28/09 - Thank You

Twenty-five minutes have gone by on the clock while I sit here and think of the best way to thank you all for your support and I still can't find the right words to say. Not to mention that I am typing with one arm because Brent twisted my other arm right off, begging to write on my blog to reach out to others to help our family. Brent you are a complete blessing and I am thankful I prayed, listened to God, and let you post. Brent, I am thankful God has blessed us with such an incredible friend such as yourself. If you missed Brent's very generous post, read it (HERE).

I really did not want to let him write for us because every single one of you have helped us out so much before. Whether you prayed for us, donated your hard earned money or supported us with your love, we are forever grateful. In just one full day, you all have helped lift such a huge burden off of our backs. Dealing with Kayleigh's situation is one of the hardest thing any parent should have to go through, so thank you to every single one of you for helping take our minds off of our financial stressors so we can focus on Kayleigh who needs all of our positive thoughts. We are SO VERY THANKFUL!!!

Please understand that we would love to share with everyone how much was donated, but several people made a very good point, mentioning an amount can cause possible security issues and we would rather protect our family from any possible criminal activity. Unfortunately, this has already happened in the past. That is also why we are going to post a PO Box soon for those of you who asked for our address. Worrying about shooting an intruder family protection at this time in our lives is something we don't need right now, especially since we will be bringing our sweet Kayleigh home soon. Thank you tons for understanding.

Kayleigh looked so beautiful today, but doesn't she everyday? More of her swelling from the surgery has gone down and she seems to be in a more comfortable state than she has lately. There are very few cries of pain or discomfort and her rapid breathing has ceased for the most part. She was awake today while we held her and even though her eyes are distant, they weren't being pulled in direction that seemed noticeable. She looks straight forward, which made us feel almost as if she was looking at us. To clear some confusion up, she has no cerebral cortex brain functions, but still has brain stem functions. This allows her to breath, heart to beat, to move without purpose, and unfortunately cry/feel pain. She doesn't understand anything, won't learn, talk, comprehend anything she she sees or hears, and will never have purposeful movements.

We were able to speak with the doctors and share our plans with them. We plan to care for Kayleigh in the NICU until she is able to come home, just as if she was normal and had no brain injury. There were questions of whether or not we bring her home with normal nursing care of palliative care. We plan to bring her home on normal nursing care, so we take our time to live as a family before we decide to say good-bye. God is almighty and we will continue to pray He lays His hands on her to create a miracle, so no quick and rash decisions will be made. We will listen to our Lord and decide when that time is right.

So we are happy to continue to share the journey of Kayleigh's triumphant road home like every single one of us planned for so long. Just because Kayleigh's brain is not working the right way, doesn't mean she is not looking down on us with pure joy that we are able to follow through with the plans we always dreamed of. We know she is rejoicing in this moment with us and is happily smiling from a better place. She is our precious daughter, miracle and gift from God, and we will not let anything get in the way of our dreams and wishes.

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for the love and support you have given us. Please pray Kayleigh continues to progress with her feedings and everything else, so she can come home sooner than later. That day is still going to be one of the most glorious days of our lives because we still remember everyone telling us she will never make it that far.

We can't wait to hold her here in peace and quiet. We can't wait to see the sunlight dance across her face. We can't wait to see the wind blow in her hair peach fuzz. We can't wait to cuddle up next to her while she naps and we REALLY can't wait until we are all home as a family for as long as we possibly can.

God Bless you all and God Bless our sweet little Kayleigh,

The pictures are so beautiful, and yet so sad. I haven't been able to get Kayleigh out of my thoughts at all for the past few days, and my heart is just breaking for you all. With my son, we were at a severely high risk for all the complications Kayleigh had, but we escaped them...every post I read about Kayleigh is like reading it about my own child. My heart and soul cheer that Kayleigh has you as her parents; those who are strong in faith, who have an unfathomable ability to love and care for her in any way she needs, and are so self sacrificing. There are no greater parents for Kayleigh than the amazing gift she received by being born into your lives.

I don't know how you can continue to go on without being so damn angry about this situation. I ADMIRE you so very much and wish I could have half the grace you have at this time. I am angry. I love God, but I am angry. I am so terribly sorry and all I can do is continue to pray. I love your little girl and I love all that she has done for so many of us, but I hate that you are all hurting so much. You have given so much of yourselves and there is little we can do to give back and help ease your pain.
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Adam,
This was a very beautifully written post. I commend you and your entire family for being so strong throughout this entire fight. Your family and especially that sweet little Kayleigh have changed my life forever. I cherish my kids more each and every day and hold them tighter than ever before. I appreciate all that life has to offer even though there will always be hard times but also many wonderful ones. I am so glad to hear that you still will be bringing Kayleigh home. You have all fought the good fight and you should be forever proud of yourselves and of course, most of all, Kayleigh. She has taught many people many different things in her short life that most people do not ever accomplish in 20 or more years. She is a precious gift from God and will forever leave an imprint on many hearts throughout the world. I know she will forever be in my heart and mind and I thank you for bringing her into this world and fighting for as long as you have and continue to do. God bless you.

Many hugs and much love---

I am so, so sorry that your little girl had to go through ANY of this struggle.

There are so many things that we just don't (and can't) understand. The most difficult is seeing our babies fight illness and suffer.

Just know this...your little girl has made a difference in so many lives during her short time here so far. Your faith has inspired me to spend more time connecting with God and Kayleigh's sweet face will FOREVER occupy a place in my heart.

What you are going through is my biggest fear realized. My daughter came so close to where Kayleigh is right now. I wish with all my heart that things were different for you and your family. Your Kayleigh has touched my heart in a way that no one else ever has before. I have tears streaming down my face and I ache for all of you.

I'm sorry if this message is scattered...I keep searching for something to say that will HELP in some small way, so here it is...

I'm praying. I'm praying.

Thanks for the update...I am a little disheartnd Adam, by reading your post it sounds like you are giving up hope a little on Kayleigh. She is a fighting miracle from God and there ALWAYS lies hope in our Lord. Look at what all Dr.'s said she would never do and she has done it. I understand there is a scientific/reality factor with what the tests are saying...but Kayleigh is special...how do you explain a miracle in scientific terms...you can't.
Matthew 15:28...

On a different note...look into Music Therapy for Kayleigh. I am a grad student in Music Therapy and we are taught alot about how Music Therapy can help people with brain injuries....(and NICU babies as well) and so so much more. If you want more info on it please don't hesitate to ask...or I can help you guys locate a Music Therapist in your area.

First, I pray for Your family and sweet baby everyday. I love her. I have often praised God for the many wonderful miricles that I have been so blessed to have witnessed and Kayleigh is one of them. I have been following your blog, and recently, with her new found prognosis, keep thinking about a book that I read a long time ago, the book is called; One Tattered Angel: A Touching True Story of the Power of Love, by Blaine Yorganson. It is a very short book, takes just a few hours to read if I remember correctly, But it is about: One Tattered Angel is a remarkable story of the power of love to reach beyond physical limitations. This is a touching, true story about the "angel" Blaine and his wife Kathy adopted in 1988. Born with hydraencephaly — only a brain stem and cerebrospinal fluid — Charity changed the lives of their entire family. Blaine Yorgason describes the immense difficulties and even greater joys of raising Charity along with their six children. In a home filled with love and compassion, Charity outlived her doctors best predictions and progressed beyond belief.
I am sure you do not have tons of time to read, but if you do and can find this book, This couple has amazing insight.
I truely believe that her soul is still with her body, and she hears every word you say to her. She may not be able to show you, but she is still there! I pray for another miricle and that you get "more time" than you would expect with your daughter home.

It is a relief to know that some of your financial burden has been alleviated so you can focus more on that precious little girl. Just know that we all support each other and it is ok to lean on others for help to stand. Your heart is a beautiful, giving, loving heart and you will one day pay this forward.

I can't help but be so frustrated at what is happening to Kayleigh. She has fought this amazing fight and it seems so abruptly ended and my heart is just breaking. I hope you will look for answers as to why this happened to her. Not now, of course as you need to focus on your love for her and cherish your sweet baby. Eventually though, someone needs to really explain where things went wrong.

I have to hold out hope for a miracle. I pray you get to take Kayleigh home soon. In the meantime I am praying with all my might that somehow God puts His light behind her eyes and gives you more time to treasure your little princess.

Kayleigh does have the best parents possible!! The two of you are just so amazing. I am so happy that you will be able to bring her home and care for her there. What a blessing that will be. I will pray that she continues to progress to the point where you can take her home. I am also praying for a miracle, too!

Thank you for the wonderful picture updates. May you be at peace and feel our prayers working.

While my son has some mild challenges, your words really put things into perspective.

Thank you for sharing your faith and what I am sure will be the hardest days of your life.

God bless you and your precious little Kayleigh. Even though her life is now different than what you thought it would be, you are giving her strength and peace that can only come from your faith. I will pray hard that you can bring her home soon. She is just beautiful!!

You both have seen Kayleigh fight through more than any parent should. Many, many times! You've done this with incredible grace and faith. You both are amazing, as I know I've told you multiple times. I'm glad you're taking your sweet girl home. I'm also glad you're doing normal nursing. I don't think her brain is done healing and I'm praying for a miracle.

Kayleigh is beautiful.

My prayers are constant.

What a sweet little girl you have there. I have been praying so much since I found your blog. I am so happy that you will be able to take her home with you soon so you all can enjoy being together as a family. She may be looking down on you both, but just think about happy she will be knowing that you brought her home so she could enjoy "her" home, "her" room and the comfort of just having her family around. That in itself shold bring comfort and peace not only to Kayleigh, but also to the two of you. God Bless you for what you are doing for your sweet little girl.

Praise God for all that have come alongside of you to carry this burden!

Praise God for the Rigg family and everyone who has come here to know your needs through them!

Praise God for love - not the worlds love but HIS!

Oh God You alone are worthy of all praise!

I'm so blessed by this post and your faith - to trust in Him no matter what comes your way. I have been posting about change and how often it is feared. Despite the fear you have both laid it down and put your faith in Him!

May God continue to bless you richly for all that you have done in His name for His glory!

It seems many have an opinion on whether Kaleigh's spirit is still in her beautiful little body or not, but I think it is cruel (although well-intentioned) to burden the Freemans with those opinions. No one reading the blog can possibly know. That is for the Freemans to determine. Please know that you have my full support and love with whatever you have to do in this most difficult of all possible parenting decisions. I pray that you will feel God's peace confirming your choices at this time.

I second that you please, please, please read the Wikipedia article presented above by "anonymous": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persistent_vegetative_state

Please consider bringing up some of these options with your doctors. The fact alone that she is opening her eyes shows that a diagnosis of a vegetative state seems likely, and even then, she hasn't been in this state long enough to qualify as a PVS (permanent or persistent). Please consider bringing up these options to your doctors before you leave to see if they have heard of these drugs or if they can recommend therapies. People HAVE recovered from vegetative states, they just sometimes need a bit more medical help to do so. <3

As always your family is in my thoughts and I sincerely hope for the miracle that is still possible.

praying for your family. i know how it is to have a child at home that the doctors have said there is no brain function. my sister's firstborn was a lively, happy, drooling machine at 5 months old. at the sitters, he choked on his formula and aspirated it. he was lifewatched to a hospital and put on life support.. trach and feeding tubes. the dr. said he had no brain function, and what was showing up was just seizures. my sister and her hubby said we are taking him home. after 103 days in icu, he went home on a vent and a feeding tube. he lived at home with 24 hr nursing for 7 years before the Lord called him home. my sister and hubby cherished every moment they had with cody. he was a true blessing, and he did respond, but the drs said he wouldnt. he cried when mom and dad left the house for date nite. and the wonderful nurses he had loved on him, read books to him, just as you would any child. we loved cody, and i know you will not regret making this choice. God is the One who gave this beautiful child to you, and He is the One who will call her home, in His time ! If you would like to "talk" to my sister, let me know.

with love and prayers..

I am not usually the person that leaves comments, but your story has truly touched my heart. Our stories are so very similar...preemie babies, NICU for months, several surgeries, almost home, and then IT happened. Our son suffered an unforeseen tragedy in the NICU at six months old that resulted in a flat reading...he was pronounced brain dead 2 days later. I can honestly say I feel the pain and agony you are feeling right now. I ache for you and your family. You are in my prayers daily.

Surely, there is at least SOME cortex function or she wouldn't be able to feel you touch her hand and pull away. You also said she heard your voice and seemed to know you. As long as there's at least a LITTLE bit of cerebral cortex function I refuse to believe there's no hope! Her brain could still reroute itself! There's a young man here in Dayton who LITTERALLY had almost the entire right side of his head blown off and I DO mean BLOWN O-F-F with a close-range gunshot and he got up and walked out of the hospital on his own two feet! I saw him on the news and most of the right side of his head was MISSING and he was sitting in a chair smiling! God can STILL work a miracle! As long as there's life there's hope!!!!! I love Kayleigh with all my heart and I REFUSE to stop believing!

Oh Adam and Aimee, I am first of all so happy to hear that God has been meeting your financial needs through people around the globe!! We of course are in a situation ourselves, but even STILL long to give. And we still pray.

Can you tell us how long Kayleigh can live with her brain like it is? Is it just up to her body and God? Or what kind of decision would you have to make? How would you let her go if it wasn't on her own? There have been many times with Veiyah that they have worried about her brain, and I guess I just wonder what happens when/if it ever became a reality.

Don't worry about my questions tho. Really just read your comments and know how loved you guys are and how much we are praying for you daily, all day long.

Give Kayleigh a kiss for me? She's so beautiful and I know how it is to kiss a baby good-bye. It hurts. But is somehow beautiful at the same time, yes? I saw Jesus take Aderah into His arms. (If you didn't read my blog where I spoke to you guys, ...if you get a chance at one point in your life, read "the shack".

Dear Freemans:
I have been following your blog and was so saddened to hear of the recent turn of events. You are an amazing loving family who has remained positive in the face of horrible news and for that I truly admire you. I know you love your little girl so much and only want what is best for her, and as a parent myself, fully appreciate the desire to take her home to be with your family. However, when I read you were taking her home with nursing as opposed to palliative care, it gave me pause, having gone through something similar in my own family. I know someone posted of a similar story where the family cared for a child for 7 years before he passed on and they were grateful for that time. Our family story was quite different unfortunately and I'm going to tell you only out of true concern for your wonderful family.

My cousin was born with hydrocephalus (water on the brain) He had brain function -- was not brain dead in any part of his brain -- but was brain damaged. My Aunt & Uncle took some "extraordinary measures" in terms of keeping him alive shortly after birth (vent, feeding tube, operation, etc.) and when he recoverd, chose to take him home from the hospital with those things in place and on 24 hour nursing care. As he grew, it became more and more difficult to care for him, not to mention financially and emotionally draining. The pressures were tremendous and ended up causing them to go through bankruptcy, lose their home and in the end, their marriage couldn't handle the stress and their other children suffered greatly. They eventually could no longer care for him once he became a teenager and he had to be institionalized. He is now 30-something years old and my 70-year Aunt recently said that she regretted her long-ago decision to keep him alive with the vent, etc. and wished they had let him go to heaven so many years ago. They are now worried about what will happen to him when they pass.

I hope you are not offended by this story. I am a Christian and have a deep faith but as you said last week, I think Kayleigh (her soul, what made her unique) is already in Heaven despite the fact that her beautiful little body remains here on earth.

Thank you so much for sharing those beautiful pictures of Kayleigh and her mommy. She honestly looks like she is content and happy to be with her mom. I donated to you all because one you deserve it and two I know that If I were in your shoes I would hope there was someone there to help. No matter what the issue was. I am glad you have family and friends there with you to surround you all and baby Kayleigh.

I only learned of Kayleigh and your family a few short days ago. The Lord has laid it on my heart to do as much as I can for you and her. In him I will do as he asks and support, pray, donate, etc any way possible.

Everytime I look at my children I see her. I think of her and you all so many times in each and ever day. Take peace in the Lord knowing so many prayers and thoughts and hands are surrounding you and lifting you up.

I think that the decision you have made is a wonderful and selfless choice. I am sure it was the hardest thing any parent could have to do. I look at her pictures and cry though. Not becasuse she looks bad ao anything like that but only knowing the pain se has endured in such a short life so far. As a mother I do not want my children to know these pains and am so blessed to have 4 healthy children.

Lord, I pray for the Freeman family, Lord that you will show them your unchanging Love and bles this family more and more each day. Let your love be seen by them and through them in a way they never thought of Lord. Guide their hands and hearts Lord. Keep them close to you so they feel you and your support and love for them and precious Kayleigh. Kayleigh has a purpose in her life and that very purpose may be to draw together Christians and non-Christians alike just as Brent said that yes non christians still supported her too. How awesome would that be if this little angle lights the path to you Lord and brings even 1 person to know you! And teach them of you, Lord. Little Kayleigh may be the best leader for you Lord, by showing everyone just how good you are. Lord we Praise you and your power in our lives as we know you have full control over this situation and everything. Thank you Jesus, Thank you for loving us so much. Amen.

Many many many many many kisses to Kaleigh and as always, constant prayers.

My heart aches. I don't want this to end like this. She's a fighter, and I want to believe that she will "snap out of it".

I look into her eyes, and BEG her not to let go....hold on...something will shift...I believe...I have Hope.

My heart is heavy with sadness. I am SO sorry you are going through this.

I hope you feel the warmth of all our love.....

Love, Light, and Prayers...tons and tons of prayers.

Can't the cortex of the brain repair itself with its plasticity? I read cases on the internet where the cortex brain cells repair itself in adults, and babies have even better chances of repairing the brain than adults. I think you guys will see Kayleigh's cortex of the brain recovered.
